Lucky Pals and deck limits

2 min read Source: CR §2.10, §6.1, §11.2, Play Guide Updated 1 August 2026

What the Lucky icon does#

The Lucky icon is checked in exactly one place: player damage resolution. While a player is flipping cards off the top of their deck to pay for damage, revealing a card with the Lucky icon stops the flipping and cancels the life loss entirely. The card is still in the graveyard; the damage is not.

That is the whole rule. The icon does nothing while the card is in hand, in the base, or anywhere else — its only job is to be somewhere in the top of your deck when you need it.

Lucky Pal as a subtype#

Separately from the icon, a Pal card can have the lucky subtype, which makes it simultaneously a "Pal" and a "Lucky Pal" for anything that references either. The normal subtype works the same way for "Normal Pal".

Deck construction limits#

The rules state four independent constraints:

  • Main deck size: exactly 50 cards. Not a minimum.

  • Copies of a name: at most 4. The limit is on the card name, so alternate art and different collector numbers do not buy you a fifth.

  • Lucky icon cards: at most 8 in the deck.

  • Colours: at most 2, with colourless cards exempt.

The soul deck is a separate 10 cards and is not part of the main deck for any of these limits.

Continuous abilities that change deck construction#

Some cards carry continuous abilities that modify the deck construction rules — the rules model these as replacement effects applied to the rules above. Such abilities become inactive once the game starts: they build the deck, then stop mattering.

Practical reading#

Eight Lucky cards in fifty is roughly one card in six. Against a strike-3 attacker, a fresh deck cancels the hit somewhat more often than not; as the deck thins, both the odds and the buffer shift. Lucky cards are not free protection — every one you reveal is a card gone from a 50-card resource that is also a losing condition.
